Worldwide, land and water pollution from discarded flip-flops is a surprisingly enormous and growing problem. Ocean Sole transforms over 50 tons of discarded flip-flops found in the ocean and on land each year, upcycling them into art to help remedy the situation and raise awareness of the problem globally.
Each upcycled Flip-Flop Manta Ray is sculpted individually, keeping 7 flip-flops out of our oceans and landfills. A few fascinating and essential facts:
The wingspan of a manta ray can reach more than 20 feet, and they can weigh up to 3,000 pounds.
Manta rays have a large brain relative to their body size compared to other rays and sharks. Because of their enormous size, their only known predators are large sharks, killer whales and humans.
The manta ray's few natural oceanic predators do not attack often; they're threatened more by commercial fishing nets than anything else.
This is particularly concerning because manta rays have a slow reproductive rate; they tend to birth only one (or rarely two) offspring every 2 to 5 years.
These wonderful upcycled animals are playful art pieces, and they have positively impacted many by cleaning up over a thousand tons of flip-flops from the ocean and waterways in Kenya, as well as providing steady income to over 150 low-income Kenyans.
Measures approximately 2"H x 10"W x 12"L
Actual design and colors will vary. While these upcycled animals are playful to look at, we do not recommend them as toys, and they are not suitable for children under 3.
Ocean Sole contributes over 10% of their revenue to marine conservation programs such as the Ocean Conservancy: working to bring people, science and policy together with a mission to counter the many threats to ocean health and sustainability. From protecting vital, vulnerable ecosystems through legislation, to enforcing accountability among leaders, Ocean Conservancy seeks solutions for a healthy ocean and the wildlife and communities that depend on it.
"I fell in love with these colorful, whimsical animals and love having them on my desk. They are a wonderful reminder of how important it is to reduce plastic in our oceans and protect marine and terrestrial wildlife. And I never get tired of telling the story of Ocean Sole and all they're doing to get flip-flops out of landfills and oceans." - Tigger
