The Firehose & Hide Backpack has two adjustable straps made from genuine decommissioned fire-hose, a body made from rescued Burberry leather and a reclaimed military-grade parachute silk lining previously destined for landfill.
It has one quick access external zip pocket, and two internal pockets - one perfect for an iPad or important documents and the other for your day-to-day essentials with a zip. The backpack will comfortably hold your iPad, book, travel wallet, and your everyday essentials. It has a grab handle at the top so you can carry this at your side.
The story of its creation goes back to 2005, and two visionary women's chance encounter with the London Fire Brigade. Since then, over 170 tons of retired fire hose material has been reclaimed and repurposed instead of heading to the landfill.
But that's just the beginning.
Each year, 800,000 tons of beautiful leather ends up on the cutting room floor, in small seemingly unusable pieces. To rescue these fragments, three interlocking shapes were cut and lovingly handwoven together, piece by piece, to create whole new hides. It's a strong, beautiful and tactile new material.
A whole new kind of luxury.
This bag may have an odor when it arrives to you, due to the rubber in the firehose. This is completely normal, and will dissipate if the bag is left to air out for a few days.
Proceeds: Each sale of these bags goes to support The Firefighters Charity in England, an organization that provides a broad range of health and wellbeing services to current and former first responders and their families.
Your purchase also helps support Ocean Conservancy: working to bring people, science and policy together with a mission to counter the many threats to ocean health and sustainability. From protecting vital, vulnerable ecosystems through legislation, to enforcing accountability among leaders, Ocean Conservancy seeks solutions for a healthy ocean and the wildlife and communities that depend on it.
