Worldwide, land and water pollution from discarded flip-flops is a surprisingly enormous and growing problem. Ocean Sole transforms over 50 tons of discarded flip-flops found in the ocean and on land each year, upcycling them into art to help remedy the situation and raise awareness of the problem globally.
Each upcycled Flip-Flop Giraffe is sculpted individually, keeping up to 32 flip-flops out of our oceans and landfills. In the wild, the giraffe has gone from a "species of least concern" to "vulnerable" in its endangered status. That means it faces extinction in the wild if nothing is done to minimize the threats to its life or habitat. Giraffes also happen to be one of the world's most interesting animals:
These wonderful upcycled flip-flop animals are playful art pieces, and they have positively impacted many by cleaning up over a thousand tons of flip-flops from the ocean and waterways in Kenya, as well as providing steady income to over 150 low-income Kenyans.
Our Flip-Flop Giraffes come in two sizes:
Medium: Uses 7 flip flops Approximately 10cm x 4.5cm x 29cm (4" x 1 3/4" x 11 1/2")
Large: Uses 32 flip flops Approximately 30cm x 18cm x 100cm (11 5/8" x 7" x 39 1/4")
Actual design and colors will vary. While these upcycled animals are playful to look at, we do not recommend them as toys, and they are not suitable for children under 3.
Ocean Sole contributes over 10% of their revenue to marine conservation programs such as the Ocean Conservancy: working to bring people, science and policy together with a mission to counter the many threats to ocean health and sustainability. From protecting vital, vulnerable ecosystems through legislation, to enforcing accountability among leaders, Ocean Conservancy seeks solutions for a healthy ocean and the wildlife and communities that depend on it.
"I fell in love with these colorful, whimsical animals and love having them on my desk. They are a wonderful reminder of how important it is to reduce plastic in our oceans and protect marine and terrestrial wildlife. And I never get tired of telling the story of Ocean Sole and all they're doing to get flip-flops out of landfills and oceans." - Tigger
